Making plans for Nigel: testo e significato del brano dei XTC

Come ogni giovedì è arrivato “L’ X Factor Day”. Per l’occasione alla band Bengala Fire è spettata la cover di Making Plans for Nigel, il singolo che ha portato la fama ai XTC

Come ogni Giovedì torna l’appuntamento settimanale con X Factor, il talent-show dedicato al canto che va in onda su Sky. Questa volta, i partecipanti dovranno tornare a misurarsi con le cover di canzoni iconiche, veri e propri successi che hanno scalato le classifiche. In modo particolare alla band “Bengala Fire” è stata assegnata la cover di “Making Plans for Nigel”degli XTC.

Making Plans for Nigel è stata la canzone che ha portato il successo al gruppo rock inglese XTC, formatosi a Swindon, la cui ascesa è iniziata con i suoni del punk e della new wave negli anni ’70. In seguito, gli XTC avrebbero suonato in una varietà di stili che spaziavano dai riff di chitarra spigolosi al pop elaborato in modo elaborato. 

Ed è stato proprio “Making plans for Nigel”, primo singolo estratto dall’album “Drums and Wires” (uscito nel 1979),  ad aver dato la svolta alla loro carriera, portandoli al loro primo successo commerciale; tant’è che la canzone ha trascorso circa 11 settimane nella UK Singles Chart .

Il brano racconta di un ragazzo che viene spinto dai suoi genitori della classe media a vivere un’esistenza fatta solo opprimente e tedioso lavoro. Come gli stessi membri degli XTC hanno dichiarato “Making Plans…” riflette un loro personale terrore, visto che anche loro provenivano da uno scenario sociale e culturale raccontato nella canzone.
